Goodbye to the Law Lords
October 2009
In one of the most historic days for the England & Wales legal system in recent times, the newly formed Supreme Court was opened for business today. Gone is the House of Lords as the highest court of the land. Instead 11 new Justices, as they will be known, have been sworn in at the new Supreme Court in Parliament Square.
This now means that the Law Lords will no longer sit in the House of Lords and participate in debates on legislation and many believe this is another step closer towards a fully elected House of Lords.
The new Supreme Court will deal with the most important legal cases in the country and legal observers are keen to monitor whether this new format will how these cases are decided.
