1 in 5 sites fails Health & Safety checks

The HSE recently carried out a programme of national inspections of refurbishment sites across the UK and the results don't make for good reading.

Out of almost 1800 sites inspected, the HSE found breaches serious enough to warrant enforcement orders at nearly 350 of them.  That's a 20 failure rate.  In some cases work had to stop immediately. The HSE said they found it disappointing that even though this initiative had been well publicised there was an obvious disregard for basis health and safety standards.

Health and safety remains one of the construction industry's biggest problems. In challenging economic times its easy to see that corners might be cut but contractors underestimate the cost to their company and to themselves personally if they fail to comply with the regulations.
